Kybella FAQ

What is Kybella?

Kybella is intended to treat moderate to severe fat accumulation. It’s the only FDA-approved injectable treatment for this purpose. While Kybella is usually used for fat that’s accumulated in the chin area, it’s also used to treat fat that’s accumulated around the bra area, knees, abdomen and more.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella produces amazing results through the active ingredient synthetic deoxycholic acid. This is a naturally occurring molecule in the body. It helps your body break down and absorb fat by destroying the cell membranes of fat cells. When using Kybella, it’s the fat cells that are targeted. After it’s dissolved, the fat is cleared by your body’s own lymphatic and circulatory systems. The fat cells are reduced gradually over the span of several weeks. As for the Kybella (deoxycholic acid), it follows the same path; it gets metabolized and broken down by your body, and then removed as waste.

Who can be treated with Kybella?

Kybella is suitable for men and women ages 19 to 65+ seeking treatment of excess fat in the chin (submentum) area, often called a “double chin”. Kybella is also a great alternative to Coolsculpting or liposuction treatments in other areas where fat pockets reside, such as the bra bulges, knees or abdomen.

How is Kybella unique?

Deoxycholic acid has been used for many years for the purpose of reducing fat. Kybella was first approved by the FDA in 2015 for safe treatment of submental fat. The FDA approval provides a safety rating that previous and current non-brand name deoxycholic acid products cannot. Since then, Kybella’s maker, Kythera has been purchased by Allergan, which dropped the Kythera name but kept Kybella.

Are results from Kybella permanent?

Yes, Kybella delivers long-term results as fat cells are targeted, destroyed and removed. With just a few treatments of Kybella, those who are experiencing fat accumulation without being overweight can see a dramatic improvement to their appearance.

Is Kybella safe?

Yes, Kybella is FDA approved and safe for use as indicated when injected by a skilled, licensed nurse, nurse practitioner or doctor provider.

What does the Kybella treatment feel like?

Kybella treatment is virtually painless, nothing more than a few tiny pinpricks. It’s a series of small injections with a very thin needle to the desired treatment area.

Does Kybella hurt?

Many claim to feel no sensation or pain at all since numbing agents are used during Kybella injections. Post-treatment, you may feel a slight tingle or short-lived burning sensation in the treated area. Many people continue to participate in their normal activities.

Is Kybella suitable for men too?

Absolutely. Men love Kybella because of how easy the treatments are. Kybella treatments take only a few minutes, and then you can return to your day’s activities.

How long does the treatment take?

For chin (submentum) fullness, also called “double chin”, the treatment takes no longer than 30 minutes. Treatment to areas of the body such as the bra bulges or knees typically take 30-45 minutes.

How many Kybella treatments will I need?

Kybella is administered by bottle called a “vial”.  Each vial typically treats an area the approximate size of two business cards. Administering Kybella to a full chin area will require one to four vials per treatment, depending on the level of fullness. Larger pockets of fat may require additional treatments spaced not less that one month apart. Up to 6 treatments may be required for maximum correction, with these spaced not less than one month apart. Multiple vials across multiple treatments are generally recommended to those seeking an ideal correction.

How soon will I see results of Kybella?

You should see positive results from Kybella within a few weeks post-treatment.

What kind of results should I expect from Kybella?

In a clinical study for Kybella, those treated with up to 6 treatments noticed up to 80% reduction in the fullness of the chin.

Will my results from Kybella look natural?

Yes. Because Kybella’s results are delivered gradually by reducing fat cells, the results appear similar to a weight loss type of outcome when correct treatment protocols are followed.

Who should not get Kybella?

Those with an infection in the desired treatment area should not receive Kybella. Pregnant or nursing mothers should also not receive Kybella. Kybella should be used with caution for those with bleeding abnormalities, as bleeding or bruising in the treatment area may occur. For clients where Kybella isn’t a good fit, Coolsculpting may be a better alternative.

Is there any downtime from Kybella?

Kybella requires no downtime. However, in cases where swelling or bruising may occur, clients may desire some “social downtime”.

What are the common side effects of Kybella?

Bruising, swelling, redness, pain, numbness, and areas of hardness in the treated area may result from Kybella treatments. While these are the common side effects, these are not all of the possible side effects from Kybella.

What should I do to get ready for my Kybella treatment?

There are no pre-care steps needed before receiving a Kybella treatment. If Kybella treatments are desired in advance of a special event, injections are suggested at least 3-6 months prior to allow time for results to fully develop.

When should I get my next Kybella treatment?

If clients seek multiple treatments, a minimum waiting time of 4 weeks between treatments in the same area is advised.

How Long Does Coolsculpting Take?

A treatment takes 35 minutes to 1 hour per area depending on which applicator is chosen. We have two Coolsculpting machines, so we are able to treat two different areas at the same time speeding up the process so you can get on with your day.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Coolsculpting?

Generally healthy individuals who are 20-30 pounds to their goal weight looking to treat areas of stubborn fat. Those above 30 pounds may still receive Coolsculpting, however, more treatments may be needed to achieve a peak result. Those who are closer to 50 pounds overweight would be advised to try a weight loss program first and return to our office at a future date for treatment of the stubborn fat.

What Happens To The Skin Post Coolsculpting?

Naturally, the skin will also reduce in size post-Coolsculpting. Thus, loose skin is generally NOT an issue after successive treatments. For treatment of the chin area, Coolsculpting has been FDA approved to tighten the skin, as long as there is sufficient fat cells in the area.

Medical Considerations And Restrictions For Coolsculpting

If you have a hernia mesh, you are not a candidate to treat areas of the abdomen with suction applicators. Our CoolSmooth applicator may be used in such cases for the right candidate. Alternate areas may still be treated safely. Those taking blood thinners are advised against treatment with Coolsculpting.

How much does a Kybella treatment cost?

Kybella treatments may require several vials depending on the level of fullness experienced by the client in the desired treatment area(s). Vials are priced accordingly, and package discounts are available.

Are there any specials or discounts I can apply to my Kybella treatment?

Yes! Brilliant Distinctions is a free rewards program offered by the makers of Kybella. Earn points on each treatment of Kybella or any other Allergan product like Botox or Coolsculpting. Points can then be redeemed for savings on treatments. Brilliant Distinctions also allows you to earn points when you shop online at your favorite retailers who participate in the Brilliant Distinctions program.

Which should I choose? Coolsculpting or Kybella?

If you are looking a solution that requires no downtime, Coolsculpting may be a better option, as Kybella may produce some post-treatment swelling and mild pain. If you are looking to treat your jawline fat with the fastest treatment option available, Kybella may be the better choice with treatments of 30 minutes or less, compared to Coolsculpting which can take more than an hour for treatment.
